CHAPTER IX: Prisoners of the Enemy
 
 

“The soldiers made them turn, a bit further ahead, into one of the tunnels that opened on the right. They walked for at least fifteen minutes, following a path that was rather irregular; and at times, the tunnel grew larger and formed small caverns and valleys crossed by underground rivers. Daniela pretended to be indifferent, but by now she was really frightened. John could barely restrain himself from taking action; he had the clear sensation that someone was following them or observing them while drawing ever nearer. And it wasn't a pleasant feeling: it was like having unknown eyes or unknown weapons pointed at you, ready to fire. Luigi gave a sign that they should look straight ahead. One could barely see a red light and some unusual movement, as if someone, or something, were waiting for them. And it didn't seem at all like a welcome party. John grew even more nervous. There were only a few dozen meters left before they reached that presumed point of arrival…or that endpoint. What was to happen there? Suddenly, they heard a noise behind them. The three turned around at once. In addition to the four soldiers, who now had grim sneers on their faces, there were three enormous and deformed beings…”
